Position Spotlight: Application Scientist – Pharmaceutical & Nutraceutical Excipients

Location: St. Louis, MO

Headquartered out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a global manufacturer of colors, flavors, and specialty ingredients—is scaling up within its Pharmaceutical Business Unit. They’re not just filling a seat; they’re building out a high-impact technical team to support a surging demand for innovative color, coating, and flavor excipients in dietary supplements and OTC pharmaceuticals. This is a rare chance to get in early on a growth wave with a market leader that supplies the world’s most recognizable brands.

The Mandate:
This isn’t a back-office R&D role. You’ll be the bridge between lab science and commercial reality—a customer-facing application expert who translates complex ingredient chemistry into practical, manufacturable solutions. Your day-to-day will involve:

  • Designing application-based prototypes (gummies, beverages, chewables, etc.) that prove out Sensient’s “Cost in Use” value proposition.
  • Becoming the go-to subject matter expert on how Sensient’s excipients behave in key customer formats.
  • Producing technical content, demo kits, and launch materials that equip both sales and technical teams to win.
  • Troubleshooting real-time customer formulation issues—because your insights directly impact their production lines.
  • Supporting first production runs and scaling new products from lab to commercial reality.

The Ideal Candidate Profile:
We’re seeking a scientist who thrives at the intersection of chemistry, food science, and customer collaboration. The sweet spot:

  • Education: B.S. or higher in Food Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy, or a related biological science.
  • Experience: 1–3 years in new product development, ideally with nutraceutical or pharmaceutical finished goods. Hands-on knowledge of analytical methods is a strong plus.
  • Mindset: Adaptable, organized, and equally comfortable working solo or syncing with cross-functional teams. You’re a communicator who can translate technical data into business value.
  • Travel: Light (<20%), mostly to support customer engagements or production scale-ups.

What Makes This Role Stand Out:

  • High Visibility: You won’t be a cog in the machine. Your work will be front and center with global customers and internal leadership.
  • Innovation Playground: Work on both natural and synthetic color systems, with real freedom to experiment and problem-solve.
  • Global Exposure: Collaborate with teams across regions and stay ahead of evolving market trends in pharma and wellness.
  • Career Velocity: This is a role where you build a personal brand—deepening industry relationships, expanding your technical toolkit, and gaining commercial acumen that’s rare in pure R&D roles.
